Informative display near the entrance to Mound Key. We went out there in July. It was great to get on the island, except I forgot bug spray.
Spanish Admiral Menendez tried to Convince the Calusans to pursue Christianity, but failed. The second large mound on the island was the site of the Christian mission.
The Koreshans had a big presence in Southwest Florida and quite a unique history. Their main settlement was nearby along the Estero River.
This shows how steep the mounds are.
This is the entrance to the island from the northeast side of Estero Bay.
